Travis Head’s splendid batting and Pat Cummins’s masterpiece of bowling helped Australia to surpass England by 3 wickets.
After winning the toss, Pat Cummins chipped in with four-per to restricted England on the total of 196 runs. Cummins’s disciplined line and unpredictable length made it difficult for English batsmen to survive hence failed to put up a batting show. He sent back Alex Hales in second over of his first spell, followed by Joe Root in his another over. England were at 8 for 5 in 6.2 over. After then, the partnership seemed growing between skipper Morgan and Moeen Ali but again it was Cummins who sent back Morgan before they shared 53 runs for the 6th wicket. England were at 61 for 6 at 21.3 over and it looked like they will be bundled out under 100 runs mark but brilliant contributions from down the order propelled England’s total to 196 runs. Chris Woakes, no.8 batsman topped their scorecard with 78 runs off 82 balls. He smashed 4 fours and 5 sixes on the way to register his 3rd ODI’s half-century. He was well supported by Tom Curran, no.10 batsman. Curran scored run-of-ball 35 runs with the help of 2 fours and single six. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood and Andrew Tye picked up 3 wickets each.
In reply, Australia created a decent partnership for every Wicket’s and crossed the rope quite comfortably in 37th over to sealed 3 wickets victory. They shared 25 runs opening stand, followed by 23 and 22 runs for second and third wicket respectively. Moving on, they shared 42 and 24 runs partnership for fourth and fifth wickets followed by 44 runs stand for the sixth wicket. An opening batsman, Travis Head topped their batting chart with well composed 96 runs from 107 deliveries. He lashed 15 fours and finished it off with the strike rate of 89. Three Aussies batsmen got succumbed in Adil Rashid’s bowling. While, Chris Woakes, Tom Curran, and Mark Wood also chipped in with a wicket each. Pat Cummins was declared as player of the match for his superb bowling display.
It was the first victory of Australia in this ODI series. With this, they open up the account in this series’s scoreline and make it (3-1), after completion of 4 matches. Both sides will face off each other on January 28, Sunday, on Perth.
